The Direc­torate of Edu­ca­tion has issued guide­lines for admis­sion under the Eco­nom­i­cal­ly Weak­er Sec­tion (EWS)/Freeship cat­e­go­ry from Class 2 onwards against avail­able seats in eli­gi­ble Pri­vate Unaid­ed Rec­og­nized Schools of Del­hi, except minor­i­ty schools, for the aca­d­e­m­ic ses­sion 2026–27.

The admis­sion process will be con­duct­ed online, and eli­gi­ble appli­cants will be con­sid­ered through a com­put­er­ized draw of lots. Par­ents should keep the fol­low­ing dates in mind because miss­ing the appli­ca­tion dead­line can make the child inel­i­gi­ble for the admis­sion process.

The online appli­ca­tion mod­ule for EWS/Freeship cat­e­go­ry appli­cants opens on 8 Sep­tem­ber 2026, while the last date for sub­mit­ting the online appli­ca­tion is 20 Sep­tem­ber 2026. The ten­ta­tive date for the com­put­er­ized draw of lots is 24 Sep­tem­ber 2026.

What Is Delhi EWS/Freeship Admission?

The guide­lines relate to admis­sion under the EWS/Freeship cat­e­go­ry in Class­es 2 onwards in Pri­vate Unaid­ed Rec­og­nized Schools of Del­hi, exclud­ing minor­i­ty schools, that are run­ning on land allot­ted by the DDA/Government.

The guide­lines refer to the require­ment that such schools admit chil­dren belong­ing to the Eco­nom­i­cal­ly Weak­er Sec­tion in the neigh­bour­hood, and the Direc­torate has estab­lished a mech­a­nism for fill­ing vacant EWS-cat­e­go­ry seats in class­es from Class 2 onwards.

For the 2026–27 ses­sion, appli­ca­tions are being facil­i­tat­ed through an online mod­ule, fol­lowed by selec­tion through a com­put­er­ized draw of lots against avail­able seats.

Who Can Apply for EWS Admission in Delhi?

Accord­ing to the guide­lines, a child can be con­sid­ered for EWS admis­sion if the appli­cant sat­is­fies the pre­scribed require­ments relat­ing to res­i­dence, income/category doc­u­ments and oth­er eli­gi­bil­i­ty con­di­tions.

Income requirement

For appli­cants apply­ing under the EWS cat­e­go­ry, the annu­al income cer­tifi­cate should show:

Total annu­al fam­i­ly income from all sources: Less than ₹5 lakh.

The income cer­tifi­cate must be issued by the Rev­enue Depart­ment of GNCT of Del­hi.

An appli­cant can also be eli­gi­ble under EWS where the required BPL/AAY Ration Card/Food Secu­ri­ty Card has been issued by the Gov­ern­ment of NCT of Del­hi before the last date of applying.

Delhi Residence Requirement for EWS Admission

Res­i­dence is one of the most impor­tant fac­tors in the com­put­er­ized school allot­ment process.

The appli­cant must be resid­ing in Del­hi and have the required Del­hi res­i­dence proof along with the pre­scribed income cer­tifi­cate issued by the Rev­enue Depart­ment of the Gov­ern­ment of NCT of Delhi.

The guide­lines specif­i­cal­ly state that the res­i­den­tial address is the main cri­te­ri­on for allot­ment of seats through com­put­er­ized draw.

There­fore, par­ents should be extreme­ly care­ful while enter­ing the res­i­den­tial address in the online application.

Be Careful While Filling the Residential Address

The Direc­torate has specif­i­cal­ly warned against enter­ing a false local­i­ty or res­i­den­tial address mere­ly to obtain admis­sion in a pre­ferred school.

The online res­i­den­tial address is divid­ed into three levels:

Schools are allot­ted accord­ing to the choic­es sub­mit­ted online with respect to the spe­cif­ic res­i­den­tial address.

If the address entered online does not match the res­i­den­tial address found dur­ing doc­u­ment scruti­ny, the school allot­ment can be can­celled. Sim­i­lar­ly, if it is dis­cov­ered at any stage that incor­rect res­i­den­tial-address infor­ma­tion was delib­er­ate­ly entered to obtain admis­sion in a pre­ferred school, the child’s appli­ca­tion can be cancelled.

Important advice for parents

Do not select a local­i­ty sim­ply because it gives a bet­ter chance of get­ting a par­tic­u­lar school. Enter the actu­al res­i­den­tial details and ensure that your doc­u­ments sup­port the infor­ma­tion pro­vid­ed in the application.

Only One Registration and One Application

Par­ents must also fol­low the appli­ca­tion restric­tions carefully.

One mobile number = one registration

Only one reg­is­tra­tion can be com­plet­ed using one mobile num­ber. All com­mu­ni­ca­tion relat­ed to the appli­ca­tion and admis­sion process will be sent through that reg­is­tered mobile number.

Only one application for one child

An appli­cant should sub­mit only one appli­ca­tion for a child.

Mul­ti­ple or dupli­cate applications/entries can result in can­cel­la­tion of the child’s can­di­da­ture or admis­sion. This can hap­pen even if the child has already been suc­cess­ful in the com­put­er­ized draw of lots.

Can a Child Apply Again If Already Admitted Under EWS?

No.

The guide­lines state that a child can avail the one-time ben­e­fit for admis­sion in Class­es 2 onwards under the EWS cat­e­go­ry in Pri­vate Unaid­ed Rec­og­nized Schools, except minor­i­ty schools, sub­ject to the pre­scribed conditions.

A child who has already been admit­ted under the EWS/DG/CWSN cat­e­go­ry in a Pri­vate Unaid­ed Rec­og­nized School can­not apply again for admis­sion under the EWS cat­e­go­ry in such schools.

Can Parents Correct the Application Form?

Par­ents should check the appli­ca­tion very care­ful­ly before final submission.

The option for cor­rec­tion of student/applicant details remains avail­able up to the last date for fill­ing the online appli­ca­tion.

There­fore, appli­cants should ver­i­fy all details before sub­mit­ting the final application.

If par­ents want to change or cor­rect infor­ma­tion, the guide­lines pro­vide that they may delete the appli­ca­tion form and sub­mit a new appli­ca­tion with the cor­rect details with­in the per­mit­ted period.

EWS Income Certificate: One of the Most Important Documents

The income cer­tifi­cate is par­tic­u­lar­ly impor­tant for appli­cants apply­ing under the EWS category.

The cer­tifi­cate must:

• Be issued by the Rev­enue Depart­ment of GNCT of Del­hi.
• Show total annu­al income from all sources of less than ₹5 lakh.
• Have an issue date before the last date of apply­ing online.

For the 2026–27 admis­sion process, the appli­ca­tion dead­line is 20 Sep­tem­ber 2026.

Example given in the guidelines

If the last date of reg­is­tra­tion is 20 Sep­tem­ber 2026, an income cer­tifi­cate issued on or before 20 Sep­tem­ber 2026 can be con­sid­ered valid.

An income cer­tifi­cate mere­ly applied for before the dead­line but actu­al­ly issued after 20 Sep­tem­ber 2026 will not be con­sid­ered for admission.

BPL/AAY Ration Card or Food Security Card

Instead of an income cer­tifi­cate, the guide­lines also recognize:

• BPL/AAY Ration Card, or
• Food Secu­ri­ty Card Hold­er document

issued by the Gov­ern­ment of NCT of Del­hi before the last date of registration/applying.

The doc­u­ment uploaded dur­ing reg­is­tra­tion will be ver­i­fied at the time of doc­u­ment verification.

Documents Required for Delhi EWS Admission 2026–27

Par­ents need to upload clear and leg­i­ble scanned copies of the required doc­u­ments dur­ing the reg­is­tra­tion process.

The doc­u­ment list men­tioned in the guide­lines includes the following.

1. Proof of Date of Birth

Any one of the pre­scribed doc­u­ments can be used, including:

What Happens If One Parent Is Not Available?

The guide­lines also address guardian­ship.

For reg­is­tra­tion under EWS/Freeship, guardian­ship will be con­sid­ered only when none of the par­ents is alive and the guardian has a Legal Guardian­ship Cer­tifi­cate as pre­scribed under the rel­e­vant statu­to­ry pro­vi­sions and law relat­ing to appoint­ment of a guardian.

How Are Schools Allotted?

School allot­ment is done through a com­put­er­ized draw of lots from the choic­es filled by par­ents in the online application.

How­ev­er, the school choic­es are linked to the spe­cif­ic res­i­den­tial address entered by the applicant.

The Direc­torate has empha­sized that the res­i­den­tial address is the main cri­te­ri­on for allot­ment of seats through com­put­er­ized draw.

There­fore, par­ents should not assume that they can freely choose any school irre­spec­tive of their actu­al res­i­den­tial location.

Can the Allotted School Be Changed?

No.

The guide­lines clear­ly state that once a school has been allot­ted to an appli­cant through the com­put­er­ized draw of lots, it can­not be changed under any cir­cum­stances.

Par­ents should there­fore care­ful­ly under­stand the school-choice process before sub­mit­ting their application.

Document Verification After the Draw

The admis­sion process does not end with the com­put­er­ized draw.

Accord­ing to the guide­lines, the 29 zon­al teams under the DDE dis­tricts of the Direc­torate of Edu­ca­tion will scru­ti­nize the doc­u­ments of suc­cess­ful can­di­dates imme­di­ate­ly after the com­put­er­ized draw of lots.

What If Documents Are Fake or Information Does Not Match?

Par­ents should take this issue very seriously.

If doc­u­ments sub­mit­ted by an appli­cant are found to be forged/fake, the allot­ment, can­di­da­ture and/or admis­sion can be cancelled.

The same applies if there is a vari­a­tion between the infor­ma­tion entered in the online appli­ca­tion and the doc­u­ments pro­duced dur­ing doc­u­ment scrutiny.

The guide­lines also state that there is no pro­vi­sion for chang­ing the data/information sub­mit­ted by parents/legal guardians at the time of appli­ca­tion, and requests for such changes will not be considered.

Documents Required at the Time of Scrutiny/Admission

Par­ents of suc­cess­ful can­di­dates should keep the fol­low­ing doc­u­ments ready for doc­u­ment scrutiny/admission:

The cir­cu­lar pro­vides the age cri­te­ria for admis­sion from Class 2 to Class 9, with age cal­cu­lat­ed as on 31 March 2026.

These age lim­its are specif­i­cal­ly stat­ed in the cir­cu­lar for the 2026–27 ses­sion.

Important: Previous School Information
