Explanation: Diligent means hardworking, careful and persistent in one’s work.

2. Choose the word that is opposite in meaning to “Expand”.

Explanation: Contract means to become smaller or reduce in size, making it the antonym of expand.

3. Fill in the blank: The manager asked the employees to _____ the instructions carefully.

Explanation: After “asked … to”, the base form of the verb is used: “to follow”.

4. Choose the correctly spelt word.

Explanation: The correct spelling is “Accommodation”.

5. Choose the correct improvement: “She is senior than me.”

Explanation: The adjective “senior” is followed by the preposition “to”, not “than”.

6. Find the next number: 4, 9, 16, 25, 36, ?

Explanation: These are consecutive squares: 2², 3², 4², 5², 6². Therefore, the next number is 7² = 49.

7. If CAT is coded as DBU, how will DOG be coded using the same pattern?

Explanation: Each letter is shifted one position forward: D→E, O→P and G→H. Hence DOG becomes EPH.

8. A person walks 8 metres north, turns right and walks 6 metres, then turns right and walks 8 metres. How far is the person from the starting point?

Explanation: The north and south movements cancel each other. The person remains 6 metres east of the starting point.

9. In a row, Rahul is 12th from the left and 18th from the right. How many persons are there in the row?

10. If all roses are flowers and some flowers are red, which conclusion definitely follows?

Explanation: The first statement directly establishes that all roses belong to the category of flowers.

Explanation: The only daughter of the woman’s mother is the woman herself. Therefore, the man’s mother is the woman, so she is his mother.

15. If in a certain code, BOOK is written as CPPL, how is PEN written?

16. A number is increased by 20% and becomes 360. What was the original number?

17. The ratio of boys to girls in a class is 3:5. If there are 64 students, how many are girls?

Explanation: Total ratio = 3 + 5 = 8. Girls = 5/8 × 64 = 40.

18. A shopkeeper gives a 10% discount on an article marked at ₹1,500. What is the selling price?

Explanation: Discount = 10% of ₹1,500 = ₹150. Selling price = ₹1,500 − ₹150 = ₹1,350.

19. The average of five numbers is 28. If four of the numbers are 20, 25, 30 and 35, what is the fifth number?

Explanation: Total of five numbers = 28 × 5 = 140. Sum of four numbers = 110. Fifth number = 140 − 110 = 30.

20. A sum of ₹4,000 is invested at 5% simple interest per annum for 3 years. What is the interest earned?

Explanation: Simple Interest = P × R × T / 100 = 4000 × 5 × 3 / 100 = ₹600.
