Advantages and Disadvantages of sexual and asexual reproduction

Asexual Reproduction

Advantages :

  1. Asexually reproducing animals do not require to spend unnecessary time and energy in locating a mate, copulating and nurturing their offspring
  2. Asexual reproduction is very beneficial for sessile organisms or organisms with kow population densities.
  3. One advantage of asexual reproduction is that a constant combination of genes matches a stable , unchanging environment in which the animal lives.

Disadvantages:

  1. Asexual reproducing species tend to evolve very slowly, because all offspring produced by of any one of the individual are alike , providing less genetic diversity foe evolutionary selection.
  2. Since genetic diversity doesn’t occur so even a single environmental event May destroy an entire species.

Sexual Reproduction

Advantages:

  1. Increased diversity because of new combinations of genes due to fertilization enables sexually reproducing animal populations to adapt to new disease and changing environment conditions.
  2. If sexually reproducing population is threatens with disease or drastically changing environment at least some members of the population will be able to resist, adapt and survive the disease or the changing environment because of their genetically diverse gene pool.

Disadvantages:

  1. The essential requirement to locate a mate for reproduction is difficult to accomplish in Sessile organisms or organisms with low population densities.
  2. Time and energy is wasted in locating a mate , attracting it, copulating and nourishing the offsprings.
  3. Exposure to predation during the mating May occur.
  4. Exposure due to disease from the mate May occur.
