The solar system comprises the sun ‚eight planets and their satellite (or moon) and thousands of other smaller heavenly bodies such as asteroids , comets and meteors.

Important Points are:
- The sun is at the centre of the solar system and all the planets revolve around it in elliptical orbit . it is the nearest star to the Earth.
- Hydrogen and Helium are the main gases present in the sun. It has a surface temperature of about 6000°C.
- Planets are opaque bodies revolving around and lightened by the sun. There are eight planets in the solar system .
- Tbe sequence of planets according to their distance from the sun is Mercury, Venus, Earth , Mars,Jupiter , Saturn , Uranus and neptune.
- The planets can be classified into two I.e. Inner planets which are nearer to the sun (Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars) and outer planets which are far away from the sun (Jupiter ‚Saturn and Neptune).
- Small planetary bodies that revolve around the sun and found in between the orbits of mars and jupiter are called asteroids.
- Meteors (shooting star) are fragments of rock coming towards the earth. They are formed due to collision among the asteroids.
- Moon is also known as the fossils planet. It is the only natural satelite of the Earth.
