The solar system comprises the sun ‚eight planets and their satellite (or moon) and thousands of other smaller heavenly bodies such as asteroids , comets and meteors.

• The sun is at the cen­tre of the solar sys­tem and all the plan­ets revolve around it in ellip­ti­cal orbit . it is the near­est star to the Earth.
• Hydro­gen and Heli­um are the main gas­es present in the sun. It has a sur­face tem­per­a­ture of about 6000°C.
• Plan­ets are opaque bod­ies revolv­ing around and light­ened by the sun. There are eight plan­ets in the solar system .
• Tbe sequence of plan­ets accord­ing to their dis­tance from the sun is Mer­cury, Venus, Earth , Mars,Jupiter , Sat­urn , Uranus and neptune.
• The plan­ets can be clas­si­fied into two I.e. Inner plan­ets which are near­er to the sun (Mer­cury, Venus, Earth and Mars) and out­er plan­ets which are far away from the sun (Jupiter ‚Sat­urn and Neptune).
• Small plan­e­tary bod­ies that revolve around the sun and found in between the orbits of mars and jupiter are called asteroids.
• Mete­ors (shoot­ing star) are frag­ments of rock com­ing towards the earth. They are formed due to col­li­sion among the asteroids.
• Moon is also known as the fos­sils plan­et. It is the only nat­ur­al satelite of the Earth.
