The First Aid : All You Need to know

The management of any emergency of helping to a person who have been injured, became sick seriously or otherwise disabled, prior to the arrival of a doctor or transportation to a victim to doctor’s clinic or hospital. First Aid should never be the substitution for derivative medical aid. First Aid is the urgent relief from pain or bleeding etc, before arrival of doctor. Any person who support must have knowledge of first aid. First aid is the emergency care and treatment given to sick person or injured person.

Definition

First aid is the imme­di­ate and tem­po­rary treat­ment giv­en to the injured or ill per­son, before the arrival of med­ical help or before shift­ing the vic­tim to the hos­pi­tal. It is giv­en by any per­son who has knowl­edge of First Aid.

Aims

  1. To pre­serve the life and pro­vide ini­tial emer­gency care to injured or sick people.
  2. To pro­tect the unconscious.
  3. To pro­tect a casu­al­ty’s con­di­tion from becom­ing worse.
  4. To pro­vide the injured as com­fort as ear­li­er possible.
  5. To ease the pain of injured.
  6. To arrange the trans­port for casu­al­ty to the near­est med­ical help.

Principles of First Aid

  1. Act quick­ly but quietly.
  2. Do not han­dle casu­al­ty in hurry.
  3. Do not get panicked.
  4. Check for patien­t’s Air­way, Breath­ing, Cir­cu­la­tion and Bleed­ing Control.
  5. Take prop­er his­to­ry and do pri­or­i­ty wise care.
  6. Tell the rel­a­tives about con­di­tion of injured.
  7. Observe patient care­ful­ly for ear­ly signs of shock, frac­ture and burn.
  8. Don’t let the crowd gath­er around casu­al­ty it may increase the anx­i­ety of the patient.
  9. Arrange trans­port for the casu­al­ty to the near­est med­ical aid of hospital.

Golden Rules of First Aid

  1. Do first things first,quickly, qui­et and with­out panic.
  2. Reas­sure the casu­al­ty and his rel­a­tives sympathetically.
  3. Look for the ABC :- A = Air­way , B = Breath­ing , C = Circulation.
  4. Avoid han­dling the casu­al­ty unnecessarily.
  5. Give com­fort­able posi­tion to the casualty.
  6. Arrange the trans­port for casu­al­ty to the near­est med­ical help.

The First Aider

Definition

A per­son who may have learnt a stan­dard method at appli­ca­tion of First Aid which is best suit­ed to his skill is called First Aider. He is trained to reach patiens and able to iden­ti­fy the prob­lem and pro­vide emer­gency care and when nec­es­sary move patients with­out fur­ther injury, to hos­pi­tal or near­est med­ical help.

Qualities of First Aider

  1. Should be a good observer.
  2. Should be tact­ful to avoid thought­ful ques­tions and learn the symp­toms and his­to­ry of the patient.
  3. Should not get pan­icked or excited.
  4. Should have the lead­er­ship qual­i­ty to con­trol the crowd and take help from the onlookers.
  5. Should have self con­fi­dence and abil­i­ty to judge injuries to be tracked first.
  6. Should be resource­ful to use the things in prop­er man­ner which are avail­able to him/her.

First Aider’s Responsibilities

  1. Pre­serve life and pro­vide ini­tial emer­gency care and treat­ment to the patient or injured person.
  2. Iden­ti­fy the sick­ness, seri­ous­ness and the nature of ill­ness affect­ing a casualty.
  3. Observe the place of a acci­dent and also assess the position.
  4. Note whether the injured per­son is con­scious or uncon­scious, alive or dead.
  5. First Aider must pro­vide prop­er and ade­quate help and treat­ment on pri­or­i­ty basis.
  6. Diag­no­sis the ill­ness or nature of injury.
  7. Pre­vent the casu­al­ty’s con­di­tion from becom­ing worse.
  8. Any­how arrange for removal of casu­al­ty as ear­ly as pos­si­ble to near by hospital. 
  9. Pro­vide safe­ty and eas­i­ness to the victim.
  10. First Aider must remain with the sick per­son until the arrival of respon­si­ble person.
  11. Always keep the iden­ti­fy card or oth­er doc­u­ments of vic­tim along with address­es of witness.

When the responsibilities end

The respon­si­bil­i­ty of the First Aider ends when the sick or injured per­son is hand­ed over to the care of doc­tor or hos­pi­tal. He/ She may assist the doc­tor later.

Warning to the First Aid

  1. Should keep in mind that he/ she is not a doctor. 
  2. Should not exam­ine wounds by open­ing which have already been ban­daged by some­body else.
  3. Should not declare any per­son as dead.
