The management of any emergency of helping to a person who have been injured, became sick seriously or otherwise disabled, prior to the arrival of a doctor or transportation to a victim to doctor’s clinic or hospital. First Aid should never be the substitution for derivative medical aid. First Aid is the urgent relief from pain or bleeding etc, before arrival of doctor. Any person who support must have knowledge of first aid. First aid is the emergency care and treatment given to sick person or injured person.

Definition
First aid is the immediate and temporary treatment given to the injured or ill person, before the arrival of medical help or before shifting the victim to the hospital. It is given by any person who has knowledge of First Aid.
Aims
- To preserve the life and provide initial emergency care to injured or sick people.
- To protect the unconscious.
- To protect a casualty’s condition from becoming worse.
- To provide the injured as comfort as earlier possible.
- To ease the pain of injured.
- To arrange the transport for casualty to the nearest medical help.
Principles of First Aid
- Act quickly but quietly.
- Do not handle casualty in hurry.
- Do not get panicked.
- Check for patient’s Airway, Breathing, Circulation and Bleeding Control.
- Take proper history and do priority wise care.
- Tell the relatives about condition of injured.
- Observe patient carefully for early signs of shock, fracture and burn.
- Don’t let the crowd gather around casualty it may increase the anxiety of the patient.
- Arrange transport for the casualty to the nearest medical aid of hospital.
Golden Rules of First Aid
- Do first things first,quickly, quiet and without panic.
- Reassure the casualty and his relatives sympathetically.
- Look for the ABC :- A = Airway , B = Breathing , C = Circulation.
- Avoid handling the casualty unnecessarily.
- Give comfortable position to the casualty.
- Arrange the transport for casualty to the nearest medical help.
The First Aider
Definition
A person who may have learnt a standard method at application of First Aid which is best suited to his skill is called First Aider. He is trained to reach patiens and able to identify the problem and provide emergency care and when necessary move patients without further injury, to hospital or nearest medical help.
Qualities of First Aider
- Should be a good observer.
- Should be tactful to avoid thoughtful questions and learn the symptoms and history of the patient.
- Should not get panicked or excited.
- Should have the leadership quality to control the crowd and take help from the onlookers.
- Should have self confidence and ability to judge injuries to be tracked first.
- Should be resourceful to use the things in proper manner which are available to him/her.
First Aider’s Responsibilities
- Preserve life and provide initial emergency care and treatment to the patient or injured person.
- Identify the sickness, seriousness and the nature of illness affecting a casualty.
- Observe the place of a accident and also assess the position.
- Note whether the injured person is conscious or unconscious, alive or dead.
- First Aider must provide proper and adequate help and treatment on priority basis.
- Diagnosis the illness or nature of injury.
- Prevent the casualty’s condition from becoming worse.
- Anyhow arrange for removal of casualty as early as possible to near by hospital.
- Provide safety and easiness to the victim.
- First Aider must remain with the sick person until the arrival of responsible person.
- Always keep the identify card or other documents of victim along with addresses of witness.
When the responsibilities end
The responsibility of the First Aider ends when the sick or injured person is handed over to the care of doctor or hospital. He/ She may assist the doctor later.
Warning to the First Aid
- Should keep in mind that he/ she is not a doctor.
- Should not examine wounds by opening which have already been bandaged by somebody else.
- Should not declare any person as dead.
