What are the types of HDD ?

Ans. Hard disks are of two types depend­ing upon how it is con­nect­ed to the system.

  • Inter­nal Hard Disk Drives
  • Exter­nal Hard Disk Drives

Important Points About Hard Disk Drive (HDD)

  • The IDE inter­face spec­i­fies that the hard disk con­troller is built on the motherboard.
  • The Ser­i­al ATA (SATA) trans­fers data between the hard disk and the sys­tem only 1 bit at a time with the speed of upto 500 MB per second.
  • The ATA trans­fers data between the hard disk and the sys­tem using 15 bits width and speed upto 100/133 MB per second.
  • SATA is a high speed ser­i­al inter­face designed to replace ATA and Ultra ATA dri­ve inter­face standards.
  • An Exter­nal HDD is a portable stor­age device which is exter­nal­ly con­nect­ed com­put­er using high speed cables.
  • Before choos­ing a Hard Disk Dri­ve for your com­put­er, var­i­ous char­ac­ter­is­tics such as capac­i­ty, inter­face and RPM of the HDD should be tak­en into consideration.
  • Fol­low the below men­tioned steps to con­nect a hard disk dri­ve to PC
    • Make the jumper settings.
    • Con­nect the inter­face cable to the dri­ve as well as to the connector
    • Check from BIOS whether the hard disk dri­ve is detect­ed or not.
  • You must trou­bleshoot the hard disk when the hard disk is not detect­ed or sound is com­ing from the hard disk.
